Studio Diary #6 September 8-15 2003
Mon
8th
Well it's monday...............and it's the 8th of September already.We'd better
get a bloody move on cause the year is running out on us.Currently listening
to new cds by Grandaddy and Mogwai and getting sort of woozy. They are both so
beautiful it makes me swoon.
Talking of which.....watched The Kings of Leon being interviewed on Subteranean
last night and they are ADORABLE!!! Very earnest and sweet and unpretentious!!!
They're absolutely my new favourite band!!!
Tuesday 9th
Managed to jump rope for 8 minutes this morning! That's outrageous for a sedentary
creature like myself who has spent a large percentage of her life languishing
on a studio couch.I can even do the cross rope thing that makes you feel like
a proffesional boxer.
Ha ha ah ahaaa...........YO ADRIAN!!!!!!!
Presently trying to stop myself from shaving the back of my head.I'm itching, positively
ITCHING to do it.It's at this clumpy and awful stage right now and it's driving
me demented.Mercifully the front of my hair is getting really long which lulls
me into believing my short hair has all grown out but then every now and again
I catch sight of my big noggin' from behind and I cringe in shame.
Wednesday 10th
Never a dull moment as they say! At rush hour this morning, sometime between
7:30 and 8:00am,a Backhoe (or a digger as we like to call them in Scotland)
crashed into a minivan just outside our studio, careened out of control and broke
right through the outside wall to come to a screeching stop just inside the
lower studio iso booth!!! By the time most of the staff arrived for work, tv
crews and news reporters were gathered around the vast gaping hole as cameramen
took pictures and locals were being interviewed for their eye witness reports. We've
been laughing about it all day. I mean to say.......whatever next?
Thursday 11th
So P Diddy's making of "Da Band" had it's season finale last night
and I have to confess that I'm sort of disappointed it's come to an end.Whenever
it was on I really found myself captivated. So much of it resonated pretty deeply
with me.Just all the struggles you go through as a band to try to understand
and respect one another's point of view.It can get really crazy sometimes and
it's rare that you ever get some insight into that side of things and the way
P. Diddy dealt with all the kids individually and collectively was really impressive. He
came across as pretty intuitive, empathetic and dare I say it, nurturing. Major
props to Diddy.He's cool.
On an entirely different subject.......it's almost impossible to believe that
2 years have passed since the now notorious 9/11 horror. How tremendously sad. What
a world we live in.
It just seems to me that the human race is simply eating itself alive. If we
have a disagreement we seek to end it with a display of violence.Tolerance seems
to be a dirty word and an outmoded principle these days. It's seen merely as
a weakness and a disgrace.
You know.............. things are really bad when someone like Anna Lindh, the
Swedish Foreign Minister is stabbed to death in an upscale department store
yesterday afternoon by an unknown assailant over her campaign to replace the
Swedish Kroner with the common Euro currency.
Murdered!!!!!! I mean...........I swear to god,I must be missing something cause
I just don't fucking get it.Why on earth would you want to go murder someone
over something like that!?!??!
Friday 12th
Woke up to the news that poor old Johnny Cash has died and ok so it's a friday
so I'm feeling kind of blue anyway but honestly I feel so sad about it.
And what seems to be really troubling me the most about it (and this is where
I really step out into outerspace) is the fact that every time I sign on to
AOL there is a big picture of John Ritter who also passed away sometime yesterday
but no sign of Johnny C.Only a little link shoved off somewhere to the side.
Now I realise that Johnny will get his due and there will be plenty of programs
etc to mark his death and life's work as time goes on but I swear to god..........everytime
I sign on I feel a little anger course through my body cause his music and spirit
have been so profoundly influential and will continue to be for decades, hopefully
centuries to come.......and maybe I'm being a little paranoid but I can't help
but feel he hasn't been given the same kind of column space as John Ritter because
he's a musician and for some reason society doesn't seem to believe they're
worthy of the same kind of kudos and respect as other artists.
Which of course makes me realise just why there has been no public outrage about
the theft of a musician's intellectual property. As I have written in this journal
before, there's no value placed on music because we need it like air.We just
take it for granted and believe it's our god given right to have access to it.I
mean.......in some ways that's wonderful.....and I'm digressing HORRIBLY...................but
where's Johnny's photograph on the AOL home page?!?!??!?! That's what I want
to know. And what was my original point!?!??!!??!?!?!!
Saturday 13th
It rained and it rained and it rained today. It was unbelievable so I took myself
off to the movie theatre and saw "American Splendour" which was dazzling!!
I loved it.It was all super twisted and dark!!
Currently listening to IAM a Robot and seething about something stupid.Someone
told me they'd heard Tommy from Abandoned Pools was dissing us and our fans
.Now I don't give a shit if you have a beef with me or my band but when you
start having a go at our fans then I have a serious problem with that. The music
industry is oozing to the brim with male lead singers like you Tommy who are
so full of their own self importance and their own genius that they forget to
practice humility and respect for other people. And Tommy dear.......rather than
diss our fans for not being music lovers because they didn't go nuts for your
band......if you are as self aware as you profess, then how come you haven't
yet considered the fact that maybe....yes maybe..... they just didn't like you
that much.
