Tis the season when every rock critic weighs in with his or her two cents.  But not every rock critic produced Nevermind, as did Butch Vig, and not many are fashion-forward fixtures on MTV, as is the famously outspoken Shirley Manson.  We cornered these two members of Garbage - one of the few bands to consistently redeem the modern - rock format this past year - in an abandoned hotel restarurant and, over caffeine and a queer fizzy vitamin B complex drink, presented for their aural consideration ten of 1998`s most inescapable tunes.

EVE 6, " INSIDE OUT "

Shirley Manson: I recognize the voice. It must be either Matchbox 20 or Hootie ?

SPIN: Uh-uh.

Manson:The young kids like this ? I don`t get into it at all.

Spin:What do you see yourself doing while listening to this song ?

Butch Vig:Mowing the lawn. The groove is good. This would be good for mowing the lawn. Not that I ever Mow the lawn.

CHERRY POPPIN` DADDIES, " ZOOT SUIT RIOT "

Manson: Is this the Big Bad Voodoo Daddies or whatever ?   Brian Setzer ?

Vig: Last year it was ska. This year it`s swing.

Manson: I`m a very good swing dancer. My mother taught me from a very early age. I`m a big fan of swing. I can think of retro movements that are way worse.

BEASTIE BOYS, " INTERGALACTIC "

Manson: Beastie Boys !

Vig: Thumbs up. This is one of the more bizarre tracks they`ve put out. I can`t even understand everything they`re singing through the Vocoder, but it`s got a good vibe.

Manson: It`s irresistible. Two bees up, as we Scots like to say.

ALANIS MORISSETTE, " THANK U "

Vig: Is this Supertramp ? That`s what the piano intro reminds me of.

Manson: Is this the single that`s out now ? I`m the only one who hasn`t heard it or seen the video.

Spin: She`s naked.

Manson: Trust me, I`ve heard the description in graphic datail.   She must be happy where she is. She`s very thankful.

BARENAKED LADIES, " ONE WEEK "

Manson: Uh - uh - uh !  Switch it off !

Vig: Off !

Manson: That drives me fucking crazy !
That makes my toes curl !

Spin: But we didn`t even get to the rap part.

Manson: Rap, my ass.

SEMISONIC, " CLOSING TIME "

Vig: I like this song. It sticks in your head.

Manson: Who is it ?

Vig: Semisonic. There`s one line that I don`t like, but that`s being nit - picky. It`s the " So finish your whiskey or beer " line.   For some reason that bugs me.  I sort of know these guys, though, and I`m glad this happened for them.

Manson: This isn`t  particularly my bag, but it doesn`t offend me. As a European, this sounds very stereotypically Middle - American.

THIRD EYE BLIND, " HOW IT`S GOING TO BE "

Vig: This is either Third Eye Blind or Matchbox 20.

Manson: Third Eye Blind.  I think he`s pretty,   the singer. He looks good in a parka. This band really bugs almost every male I know. Men hate them because of Stephan Jenkins, which instinctively makes me want to say I like him just to fuck off all of these men who`ve done nothing but leer at certain women with very dubious musical talent who shall remain nameless. When I try to attack these women for their lack of musical talent, I get accused of dissing them just because they`re so good - looking. So this is the girl`s revenge : He`s hot !

FASTBALL, " THE WAY "

Manson: I love this already.

Vig: I like this too. It reminds me of Elvis Costello.

Manson: This is so like " Delilah " by Tom Jones - same chord structure and very similar melody. Don`t want to get them into any trouble but...

GOO GOO DOLLS,  " IRIS "

Vig [ to Manson ]: This is your favorite band.

Manson: Who is it ?

Vig: Starts with a G.

Manson: Ooh ! It`s the Goo Goo Dolls
[ laughs uproariously ]. Yikes !

Vig: This song is too sappy for me.

Manson: Thumbs down. Can you please play something good ?

HOLE, " CELEBRITY SKIN " and " MALIBU "

Manson: We love Hole ! This sounds just amazing on the radio.

Vig: Now play track four ! " Malibu " may be the song of the year. I love it. It makes you feel good and bummed out at the same time. It makes the hair on my neck stand up when i hear it.

Manson: Absolutely exquisite. Two bees, way up !
